caught not taught
I was watching Clay’s hockey game the other day. His Tyke team is 3 - 0 on the season so far and that is a far cry from their discouraging seasons in past years. Clay is very happy to be on a winning team. He started his first game as goalie (as that is what he said he wanted to be . . . another story) but played Centre and Defence for the next two games. Got his first hatrick in the last game!!
Toward the end of the game, just seconds before the buzzer, Clay had a breakaway. He and the youngest player on the team were over the red line headed toward the goalie. The other boy, was the youngest player on the team, and hadn’t scored a goal yet. Clay looked ahead to see this boy just about to the blue line and fires up a pass, giving the boy a long wide open break-away.
Unfortunately the buzzer went just before the puck got to the net, but it was the pass I was impressed with. I asked him after the game, “Why did you pass the puck up to Charlie at the end of the game? Why did you think to do that?” He said, “Dad, I see the Pete’s doing it all the time.”
I thought that was good proof to the statement “there is more caught than taught”. And Clay was taught teamwork and passing from the example of his favorite hockey team.
