first game of the season
Tonight was the first game of the Peterborough Pete’s 2006/2007 season. As I wrote in my first post, we have four seasons tickets for these games (prime seats too!). The reason the four seasons tickets were given to us is so that we could bring our neighbours (and friends) and to go as a family as well.
For me its all about mission and building deep relationships with people and what better way to build deep meaningful relationships with men in my neighbourhood and sphere of influence than to take them out to a hockey game! Tonight we had to arrive late, as Clay’s school open house was in conflict with the game time, so knowing that, I invited some friends who would not be offended if the host didn’t show up on time. Clay and I had a GREAT time with the boisterous Carlo Raponi and Michael VanderHerberg - a GREAT time.
For the first time, I sat in my new seat and realized that this was a gift from God. I looked around and began to say hello to my other new neighbours (fellow Pete’s fans) . . . the mission field just expanded.
Have you ever tried walking up to a complete stranger and saying something affirming to them? “Hey, I was really into your holler last season, you know after each goal. That got the whole section going, good work.” - or - “Hey, are you going to sport that Mohawk for the games again this year - that was awesome last year.” Try it - you’ll make instant friends, ones who look for you when you walk in the room - cuz nobody does that any more and you will stand out, in my case just as much as they did - at least in their minds.
So we’re off on another seasons journey with the Pete’s, my family, my friends, my neighbours and my new neighbours. I pray that the Lord would use our love for others as a tool to share his love with them too.
